Balancing Support for Nature and People

At the Red River Wildlife Refuge, wildlife and people are the focus. Balancing conservation with recreation opportunities is a priority at all national wildlife refuges when compatible with the goals of a particular refuge.

“The overarching goal of our wildlife-dependent recreation policy is to enhance wildlife- dependent recreation opportunities and access to quality visitor experiences on refuges while managing refuges to conserve fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats.”

The National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997 identifies six priority recreational uses (hunting, fishing, wildlife observation and photography, environmental education and interpretation). These activities are priorities on every refuge, if found compatible with the refuge's statutory purposes.
