EVERY WILDLIFE REFUGE NEEDS A FRIEND

Our Mission

Our mission is to be an advocate for the Red River National Wildlife Refuge by promoting conservation, enhancement, and appreciation of our native wildlife communities through education, fund raising, development of partnerships, and developing projects for volunteers.

Friends Focus Areas

  • Wildlife

Wildlife is the number one reason people visit the refuge. Learn about different wildlife species and what you can do to help improve the habitat they depend on. Consider becoming a member.

  • Conservation

The overarching mission for Red River NWR is to provide for the restoration and conservation of fish and wildlife habitats in the Red River Valley ecosystem in northwest Louisiana.

  • Culture

Red River NWR is located in the Red River Valley which historically was forested with bottomland hardwoods, cypress sloughs and shrub/scrub swamps, providing a variety of habitats for wildlife.

  • Education

Research and education efforts at the refuge focus on the restoration and conservation of native plants and animal communities on suitable sites in the Red River basin, including restoration of extirpated species.

    more information

The visitor center was very informative with displays and helpful staff. Nice bathrooms. Nice overview walkway to the lake. We enjoyed walking on a .3 mile trail with singing birds and beautiful trees/greenery. A good stop to learn more about the river, animals, birds, and area.

MEET THE FRIENDS TRAILBLAZERS

It’s all about the people

This wildlife refuge is dependent on people, on professionals with passion and perseverance. It’s messy, it’s complicated and anything but tidy. And yet, these folks collaborate with many organizations and volunteers to get the work done for wildlife and plant communities.

Ronnie Maum has been photographing wildlife at the refuge for many years. Check out his gallery via the button below.
